The Conisbrough and Denaby 100 Project

Walter Bell

Walter was 38 years old when he was reported missing, presumed dead on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916.  He is commemorated on Thiepval  Memorial to the Missing.

Word of Walter's death was reported to his Sister, Mrs Boulton at 12 Northcliff Road.

Walter had joined the army on the 27th August 1915, and was a Private in the 8th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. He was awarded the Victory, British and 1915 Star medals.

Very little has been found about his personal life or history. It is known however, that prior to joining the army, Walter worked at Kilner's glassworks.

Walter is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing in France. We visited and laid his tribute in April 2015.
