The Army

The British Army was a huge and living thing. It changed almost beyond recognition between August 1914 and November 1918 and became a very different, more efficient and above all larger thing altogether.

Here we explain various parts of the army and how they fit together to make up the larger beast.

Army Structure

The structure of the British Army can be difficult to understand. What came above or below what, who commanded each level and how many men made up each group?

The diagram below attempts to simplify this to make it easier to understand.

Divisional Structure

Much more than just men and guns went (and continue to go) into an army division. Engineers, Cavalry, Artillery, Medical personnel... all of these were necessary to ensure that the army functioned effectively.

The diagram below shows the make-up of a typical WW1 army division in 1914.
