Thomas was incredibly unfortunate in that he died of pneumonia in Italy in May 1918, and is buried in Faenza Communal Cemetery. He was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star medals. He had been overseas since the 11th March, 1915.
Thomas's medal card shows that he arrived overseas on 11th March, 1915; three years before he died. Although he died in Italy, he had originally been posted to 'France' - the Western Front. This could be either France or Belgium as both were referred to as 'France'.
Thomas's card states only 'Died', which is a contrast to the regular 'KIA' or 'Killed in Action' as he died of illness.
