John was 26 years old when he was killed in October 1917. His brother Wilfred had already been killed in April of that year, and is commemorated at Basra, Iraq.

John himself had been wounded previously at Loos, as well as being hospitalised twice with gas poisoning, and once with trench fever (a flu like condition which seemed inexplicable, but could take down dozens of men at a time). John went missing on the 9th October, and was never found.

He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing. He was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star Medals.

Sadly, little record of John’s personal life can be found. He was 26 when he died, and apparently single.

John Cross

We visited John's grave in August 2014, and laid his tribute. Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing lists the name of over 30,000 men who's final resting places are not known.
