Harry was a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
A Second Lieutenant was the lowest rank of Commissioned Officer, and as such was often still somewhat of a dogsbody in the Officer's Mess, and often was not recognised as any different to a Private by the men. Their official capacity was to lead the platoon or, if a Lieutenant existed, to take over from them should they fall.
Before joining the army, Harry worked at the Pearl Assurance Company, which operated from the Royal Oak Public House opposite the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Pearl still exists, under the name of Phoenix Group Holdings.
Harry is buried at Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck.

We visited Harry's grave in August 2014, and laid his tribute. The cemetery is beautiful, as you can see from our photograph.
