George was killed in action on 1st July 1916; the first day of the 'Battle of the Somme'. He is commemorated on Thiepval in France as his body was never found.

George enlisted to the York and Lancaster Regiment 9th (service) battalion at Conisbrough, and lived at Maltby Street, Denaby. He went to France on 27th August 1915 and was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star medals.

Before joining the army, George worked at Cadeby Main Colliery as a miner.
