Charles Butterfield died on the 25th March 1918 in France. He was a Private in the Lincolnshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion and also served at some point as Private 30111 of the Leicestershire Regiment, before transferring to the Lincolns.

Born in around 1899 to Thomas and Hannah Butterfield in Mexborough, the family in 1901 were living at 5 Sarah Street, Mexborough and comprised of Thomas, Hannah, Charles and his elder sister Selena. His father Thomas worked at the 'Glass Bottle Works' - presumably Kilner's. Thomas was originally from Rotherham, while Hannah was born in Attercliffe, Sheffield.

Over the next ten years, the family had a further three daughters and remained living at Sarah Street along with Hannah's father David and two boarders, one of whom is Hannah's brother, William.  It seems that after Hannah's mother Sarah died in 1910, her father and younger brother came to live with her as the eldest daughter/sister.
