The Conisbrough and Denaby 100 Project

Arthur Bashforth

At the time of his death on 23rd July 1916, Arthur was a Private in the 1/5th Battalion, KOYLI. At the time the Battalion was in the line at Authuille, and the war diaries say very little about what happened on the day.

Arthur lived at 85 Mount Pleasant on Sheffield Road, Conisbrough. the buildings seem to be gone now, but I have found records of them being beside 'Provident Place'.

Arthur joined Kitchener's volunteer Army in 1914, and was a keen boxer. Indeed, the month before he was killed he had won the '9 stone divisional boxing championship', behind the lines in France. Arthur was allowed 3 weeks 'liberty to roam about the camp' in order to prepare for his fights.

In 1915, Arthur was seriously wounded in the throat, and was a long time recovering in Warrington Hospital before returning to the front.

Arthur is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. We visited in April 2015 and laid his tribute card.
